I am pleased to announce the launch of the newly redesigned Philadelphia Chapter website!

Here are just a few of enhancements and changes:

  • The new WordPress branding being used by the Philadelphia Chapter is standard for all SLA units, giving all chapters, divisions and caucuses a uniform look, feel and functionality.
  • The site now includes in-depth information about the Beverly M. Knower Fund, including lists of past recipients, testimonials from award winners, and a historical list of those impacted by the Fund.
  • Want to be more involved with the chapter?  Our Volunteers section includes updated information on new chapter leaders, as well as listings of opportunities for pitching in and joining the cause.
  • The Job Postings is now sortable by position, location, employer and by date!
  • The President’s Corner will provide quarterly updates from the chapter’s leadership about new initiatives and projects under consideration.
  • Our Program History (listed under the “About Us” section) provides a historical snapshot of programs, activities and events from years gone by — all the way back to 1988!
  • Be sure to follow us on Twitter to hear all the latest that the chapter has to offer.

Many thanks to Robert Guerrero, Robin Naughton, Alyson Avery, Valerie Ryder, Nicole Snyder, Karen Krasznavolgyi and Nicole Engard for their hard work in bringing this together!

Cheers,
Brian

The program was held as a lunch time webinar as well as an on-site session at Drexel University, Hagerty Library, with Drexel iSchool students.
-
Several SLA Philadelphia Chapter members shared their SLA2012 Conference presentations in Chicago with ten on-site and 17 webinar attendees.
-
Jean Fisher, Vantage Information Services, presented “Taxonomy Creation for AAAS” from the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division Contributed Papers session.  Jean discussed the project to design and implement an all-sciences taxonomy for the AAAS to support their publications program.  The taxonomy is used to assign peer reviewers for submitted articles, determine which AAAS journal is appropriate for publication of the article, publish content to the AAAS website, aid usage analysis, and repurpose legacy content.  Jean shared best practices for developing taxonomies and her experiences as project manager for this taxonomy project.
-
Barbara Wilson and Amy Spiegel, Dow Chemical Company, presented “Delivering Higher-value Service: Using Combined Internal and External Information to Drive Business Decisions”
from the SLA Contributed Papers session.  Barbara and Amy discussed their project to embed graphical display and visualization of external economic indicators in Dow Chemical’s ERP system which uses the SAP software. Barbara and Amy worked with Dow’s Advanced Analytics team to select the data source and implement the data feed.  As a result of the project, key purchased content achieved a wider dissemination within the company and managers were using a consistent set of external data from an automated data source combined with internal, proprietary data for making critical business decisions.
-
The SLA Philadelphia Chapter thanks
DUSLA for their support in use of the Drexel facility, Tim Siftar for use of Drexel’s webinar platform, as well as Jean, Barbara and Amy for sharing their presentations with chapter members.
